Our Schools Work

While it is easy to focus on problems, the fact is that our school district is working quite well. Most of the parents in our district are happy with the education their children are receiving. The students in this district perform very well on the state CSAP tests. Our high schools are graduating students at a high rate, and many go on to higher education. There is a wide choice of schools for our kids. We are in the process of switching to standards based instruction which is showing every sign of having a very positive impact on our students. Unlike some other districts in the state, our district is in sound financial condition. We should all be proud of our school district.

Attracting and Retaining Teachers and Staff

Probably the single most difficult issue facing this district is attracting and retaining quality staff. Even though our teacher’s salaries are similar to other Colorado communities, the high cost of living makes it difficult for our teachers to live here. The board is working hard to keep our teachers by working on affordable housing and finding ways to help our employees to buy homes. We are also working on finding ways to increase salaries.

Federal and State Mandates

In recent years, Federal and State mandates have changed the way the district works. The CSAP tests are the most visible results of State standards, but there are many other rules, standards, and regulations that the district must follow. We are fortunate in that our administration has been able to maximize educational opportunities while still complying with these mandates.

Uncertain Economy

The Colorado economy is facing great uncertainty. Three state constitutional amendments are creating a nightmare for our state legislature. These economic woes are likely to affect our district directly in the near future, and it is the responsibility of the board to plan for all contingencies. So far, our district is in solid financial shape, and should weather the coming storm.

Aging Buildings

Many of the buildings in the district are reaching the end of their useful lifetime. The school board has been working hard the past year to develop a new master facilities plan to address this issue. The board has been gathering community input that will result this fall in a plan for upgrading buildings in all three communities. I fully support this plan, and will work hard to educate our community on the need for this important upgrade to our school buildings.

Community Diversity

The Roaring Fork School District is unique in that it is made up of three very distinct communities, each with different problems. I believe it is important that all three communities receive their fair share of resources and attention. This district must address the diversity of our communities so that every student will receive the best education possible. One of the great things about public education is its commitment to serving every single child in the community.
